All branches of steel producing and manufacturing industries use surface finishing processes. Semi-finished or finished products must be free from rust, scale or contaminants for any subsequent operation. Mechanical descaling via wheel blasting is a clean, fast and safe process.
Today, the different operations for the production of hot rolled strip (carbon- , silicon and stainless steel strip) are done in-line: annealing, cooling, descaling and pickling are combined in integrated processing lines. This combination of mechanical descaling and chemical pickling has greatly reduced the amount of chemicals used.
World leading Wheelabrator technology is available for narrow, medium and wide strip (18" - 83" or 450 – 2100mm). Blast cleaning systems can be adjusted to various strip widths and quality grades and will enable practically any output demand.
In the steel strip production process, the rolls need to be etched (made rough) to a stringent tolerance, and controlled over time. This roughness can be created in a wheel blast roll etching machine.
The machines can be used for rolls from 60mm diameter to 1m diameter in standard versions, although larger rolls can also be treated. Different grades of steel grit can be used in the same machine to achieve different/etching roughness tolerances. The various grades of etching are repeatedly obtained to maintain the rolled surface quality. A maximum abrasive velocity up to 120m/s allows finer abrasive to be used with the advantage of a higher peak density and longer service life of the mill.
